Young Israeli author Chen Kuczynkski is a student of script-writing at the Minsher School of Art in Tel Aviv. HANAN THE GREAT MASTER is his third book following SMALL TOWN BAR and THE LOVE OF A YOUNG COUPLE. Chen states he tries to pass on the message of life, happiness and love as well as the knowledge that optimism and good shall follow even the worst and most tragic events. Refreshing approach for a young writer who is already displaying a fine skill set in making excellent books.Chen’s training as a script writer is evident in this rather brief but very well designed story of love in Rome: before the story opens Chen lists the cast of characters, sharing their relationships and provides a clue to the story by designating the thieves, the bar staff of the Local Bar, and the terrorist and Indian spice seller and gangster.
The story is offered in script fashion with action set in italics. For example, as Chen opens his proscenium arch curtain he invites us in with the following: ‘In the city of Rome, the capital of Italy, there is a bar called the Local Bar, where the citizens come to enjoy themselves as much as possible night after night. The Local Bar is jointly owned by Don Juan the Butcher and Hanan the Great Master and his wife Ziva. The latter two have managed the place for many years and so it continues night after night. The Local Bar features singers and mandolin players, a belly dancer, stripper, barmaids, waitresses and more, and is a very fun place. Then – Ziva: “Dear husband… everything is ready, the whole staff is ready and organized for tonight as usual. The doors to the bar are open and the staff is already in place and ready… customers have already come in and started to party like every night. My Hanan, you’re the only one still pushing paper in the office as usual every evening and don’t ever take part in the merriment. Hanan suggests to his wife, Ziva, that they should leave the management of the bar to Mario, the shift manager, and go out with him to Don Juan the BUTCHER’s Roman Pizzeria to eat pizza or lasagna, and then take a leisurely walk through the city market to get some air and enjoy themselves. Hanan The Great Master: “Let’s go eat at Don Juan the Butcher’s Roman Pizzeria. We could have pizza or lasagna. Let’s get out from work for a while and take it easy, Ziva. Ziva: And who will manage our Local Bar, my love? Hanan The Great Master: Our shift manager will manage the bar and we’ll go for a short walk. We’re 32 years old, my darling Ziva and we haven’t been out for fun ages like we did when we were 22. We’ve had this business for eight years and we’re too invested in it. It’s a successful business and shows a nice profit, it’s true. Ziva: It really is time we start to go out for a while, like we did then… okay, let’s go.’
That is the style, and as for the love story, Chen offers the following plot synopsis – ‘The main characters are Hanan and the Don Juan who are business partners in Italy. When I read a book, a novel or anything that has to do with a life of a mafia guy (or guys) what I expect is ton of action, sex, erotica and of course – honor and love. Hanan the Great brings us all that, although in a bit ‘shorter’ version (the book has only 114 pages). The three daughters of one of the main characters from the book (his name is Don Juan) add more spice to everything. When you add the fact that the story’s plot is going in Rome, then we have a perfect setting for a good gangster story. I like it. Five stars, definitely.
