Clarence Michael James Stanislaus Dennis was judged Australia’s most prosperous poet in 1917 (wikipedia) but I had never heard of him until I made an accidental discovery at the world’s largest secondhand book fair held biannually at the Exhibition Halls on Brisbane’s South Bank. I was in the mid priced hall wading through mountains of coffee table sized Australiana books, looking to add to my bush poets collection, when a slim hardback slipped out of the pile – ‘Songs of a Sentimental Bloke’. It was just a dollar so I thought I would give it a go.
CJ (1876-1938) fitted the bush poets period but I couldn’t follow the early twentieth century Sydney rhyming slang that details the courting of Doreen and subsequent life. Once I had read through the ‘glossary’ to understand the meanings reading ‘A Sentimental Bloke’ became pure delight.
For this compendium I have included ‘Glugs of Gosh’; an excellent parody of Australia that is as relevant today as when it was first published, though again you will probably need the glossary.
Also included is ‘A Childrens Story’ which I feel does not live up to expectations raised by ‘Sentimental Bloke’ and ‘Glugs of Gosh’ but see what you think.
Technically C J Dennis does not fit the ‘bush poet’ classification but he ranks alongside Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson as one of Australia’s most popular poets of his era. Any collection of poetry covering the period of Australia’s expansion westwards along with the growth of nationalism amd eventually nationhood would be incomplete if it excluded C J Dennis.

As a boy growing up in a country town not far from where C J Dennis grew up, "The Sentimental Bloke" was on the bookshelf at home, and an older brother was a big fan.I didn't get enthusiastic at that time, but later discovered his poetry for children. I often read it to my children who loved it. We still sometimes quote it at each other. So when I saw a fairly comprehensive collection I had no trouble justifying a dollar expenditure.
I must say I am more delighted by "Den's" poetry than I had expected. "The Sentimental Bloke" when read as a continuous narrative, is wryly humourous, touching, sometimes wise, and laugh out loud funny in turn. Don't let the strange wording worry you, for the most part the meaning is obvious from context, and if you're really stumped there is glossary. The glossary makes amusing reading by itself.
One big grump is the lack of a navigable index. With a collection like this I like to dip into for different poems at different times. The children's poetry - which is delightful when read aloud - is at the back of the book. I got to it by scrolling through the whole book. Now I go to The End and scroll back. But I'm sure there are some delights yet to be discovered because of this lack.
So AA plus to CJ Dennis but a bare pass mark to the publisher.
One last comment on the publisher's notes: he mentions that until he stumbled across this book in a second hand store he had never heard of Dennis. Hard to believe that anyone with an interest in early 20th century Australian poetry had not heard of this poet, who for fame is only just behind Paterson and Lawson, and for talent is probably their equal.

C J Dennis compendium Australia Bush Poets eBook C J Dennis David 'Broone' Brawn Reviews
I am not a lover of poetry but i bought this one for the aussie content and to read some of the weird words we aussies use and how we spell them.....It was a bit hard but if you can get the right understanding of the words they are very funny and a bit of a laugh.
I've always liked CJ and this collection did not disappoint. I especially liked the Glossary of Oz words and sayings. You dont hear them much nowadays but most were common in my early days.
